There are several issues with using color to encode language.
-
•10% of all males are color blind (less then 1% of females are color blind).
-
•Color memory is not very good in humans (or at least not well developed).
-
•Learning to “read” color text is difficult.
-
•Computers are not yet set up to easily represent accurate color.
-
•A great amount of light is needed to read color data from a printed source.
-
•Many colored pigments are not “light-fast” and so have a tendency to fade over time.
-
•Color changes depending on the color of the light used to view it.
-
•Colors interact with neighboring colors visually changing the appearance of each other.
-
•Color needs more surface area on a page to represent text than some traditional fonts.
